Tom-Christer Nilsen og Lene Westgaard-Halle har forfattet et meget kritisk brev rettet til ordførerne i norske kommuner, publisert i flere norske aviser. Det handler om min nylig publiserte bok “Motvekt – Fakta om klima”. Her ber de folk «velge fakta, og ikke fiksjon», og å avstå fra å kjøpe eller motta boken. Ifølge dem representerer den en «åpenbar og overveid fortolkning og fordreid framstilling av fakta». Boken er populær fordi «løgner er mer underholdende» enn sannheten, samt at «virkeligheten ofte er vanskeligere å håndtere enn fantasi», skriver de.

Det er underlig at disse to politikerne uttrykker større bekymring for «sannheten» og «fakta», men så gjennom sitt brev følger opp med uriktige framstillinger, personangrep og åpenbare falske påstander. De starter angrepene med å påstå at boken har framkommet gjennom et samarbeid med Heartland Institute, og at jeg er assosiert med dette. Ifølge dem «bør man sjekke forfatterens bakgrunn, og hva The Heartland Institute er». Jeg har imidlertid ingen tilknytning med Heartland Institute, og har aldri mottatt ett eneste øre fra dem. Jeg har ingen idé om hvordan de har kommet fram til denne misforståelsen.
Min egen faglige bakgrunn er geologi. Jeg arbeider som Expert Reviewer for FNs klimapanel (IPCC) i den kommende klimarapporten (AR6). Jeg er direktør for CO2 Coalition, en amerikansk ikke-profittorganisasjon som utgjøres av mer enn 60 fysikere, klimatologer og energieksperter, som legger vekt på å presentere de mange fordelene med økt konsentrasjon av karbondioksid i atmosfæren.
I kontrast til deres påstander, hevder jeg tidlig i boken at CO2 i atmosfæren først og fremst øker grunnet forbrenning av fossil energi, og at økningen har en oppvarmingseffekt. Altså ingen fornekter her. Vi skiller lag gjennom at jeg tror at menneskeskapt oppvarming er moderat, og langt overstiges av de samme naturkreftene som har styrt temperaturen gjennom tusener og millioner av år.
En annen falsk anklage (vær så snill å telle dem) er at jeg visstnok har «kirsebærplukket» data som viser en 12-årig stopp i oppvarmingen, og ikke viste alle tilgjengelige data. De kunne ha bladd én side tilbake, samt siden før dette, for å finne data som de hevder jeg ikke vil vise fram.
Våre to ikke-så-troverdige politikere nevner også at havnivået kan stige fem meter høyere enn i dag, og oversvømme Oslo, Stavanger og andre byer, samt sterkt utsatte øyer i Stillehavet. Data fra den virkelige verden støtter ikke dette, og det gjør heller ikke IPCC. De beste langtidsmålingene av havnivåstigning er fra faste målepunkter i strandsonen, og de viser at denne stigningen begynte midt på 1850-tallet, lenge før vi tilførte CO2 til atmosfæren i mengder som kan ha betydd noe for klimaet. Fra den tid har havnivåstigningen fortsatt, uten noen akselerasjon. Interessant nok er Maldivene én av de øygruppene som påstås være mest utsatt, og her bygges det nå tre store hotellkomplekser i strandsonen, finansiert av selskaper og forsikringsselskaper som unngår risiko som pesten.
Implisitt i disse lovgivernes falske anklager er at våre nåværende temperaturer er uvanlige, og noe som tidligere aldri har inntruffet – i en skala på tusener av år. Det er faktuelt uriktig. Rekonstruksjoner av temperatur viser det. Eirik Raude og hans folk dyrket bygg på Grønland for tusen år siden. Dette kornslaget kan ikke dyrkes der i dag, og denne historiske kjensgjerning viser også at Westgaard-Halle og Nilsen tar feil. For 2 000 år siden dyrket romerne sitrusfrukter nord i England, og også dette historiske faktum forteller det samme.
Før klimaendringer ble politisert, ble tidlige varmeperioder omtalt som «klimaoptimum», fordi både klodens økosystemer og menneskelige kulturer trivdes. Geologisk og human historie forteller oss at tidligere varmeperioder innebar store fordeler, mens de kalde periodene var ganske forferdelige. Vi bør derfor ønske varmen velkommen, og frykte kulden. Særlig i Norge.
Ganske ubegripelig inkluderer forfatterne denne vesle politisk korrekte perlen: «Vi er tilhengere av et åpent ordskifte der alle meninger skal kunne komme til orde». Det gjelder tydeligvis bare dersom man ikke er uenige med dem.
