Kulderekord på Grønland bekræftet.
Minus 69,6 grader celsius er den koldeste temperatur nogensinde målt på den nordlige halvkugle. Rekorden i Grønland blev sat d. 22. december 1991.
Rekorden blev opdaget ved en gennemgang af data fra automatiske målstationer, som har været anvendt til forskning tilbage i 1990’erne. World Meteorological Organization, som er FN’s organ for vejr, klima og vand, har netop bekræftet rekorden.
“I en tid med klimaforandringer er der stor fokus på de mange nye varmerekorder. Denne nye kulderekord er en vigtig påmindelse om, hvor store kontraster der er på planeten”, udtaler WMO’s generalsekretær, professor Petteri Taalas og fortsætter ”Det er et vidnesbyrd om dedikation, at klimaforskere og vejrhistorikere nu kan afdække gamle rekorder og dermed give os en bedre forståelse af både nuværende og historiske klimaekstremer” (oversat fra WMO’s pressemeddelelse).
På toppen af Indlandsisen
Rekorden blev registreret i 3105 meters højde, nær indlandsisen topografiske højdepunkt, på en automatisk målestation ved navn Klinck.

Måleren var én af flere, som blev sat op 1990’erne af forskere fra University of Wisconsin-Madison. Formålet at var afdække de meteorologiske forhold på indlandsisen.
I 1994 blev måleren pillet ned for at blive testet, hvorefter den blev sendt til Antarktis.
Slår rekord fra Rusland
Den tidligere kulderekord på den nordlige halvkugle er minus 67,8°C og er målt to gange i Rusland i hhv. Verkhoyanksk (februar 1892) and Oimekon (januar 1933).
”Det bemærkelsesværdige i den her sammenhæng er, at Verkhoyanksk er det samme sted, hvor man i sommer målte 38°C i forbindelse med hedebølgen i Sibirien. Rekorden mangler stadig at blive bekræftet af WMO, men uanset hvad er det et vidnesbyrd om, hvor store udsving i temperaturer, vi kan opleve på Jorden, siger John Cappelen, seniorklimatolog på DMI, der har været med i WMO’s ekspertpanel, der har vurderet og bekræftet rekorden.
Verdens koldeste temperatur på -89,2°C, fra 21. juli 1983, er i øvrigt målt ved den højtliggende vejrstation Vostok (3240 meter over havet) på Antarktis.
