Mens vestlige medier er fulle av artikler om ekstrem varme og nedbør i deler av den nordlige halvkulde, går den uvanlige kulden på deler av den sørlige halvkule stort sett under radaren. Noen mener at rapporter om kulde ikke passer inn i den fortellingen om global oppvarming som medier, «klimaforskere» og politikere prøver å overbevise om for å godgjøre omfattende endringer i forbruk, økonomi og energisystem.
Men i Sør-Amerika er det rekordkulde og snø i disse dager.
– Jeg er 62 år gammel og har aldri sett snø, vet du? Å se naturens skjønnhet er ubeskrivelig, sa lastebilsjåfør Iodor Gocalves Marques i Rio Grande do Sul, melder Reuters.
Det er et polart lavtrykk som har ført kulden nordover. 40 kommuner i Rio Grande del Sul rapporterte om minusgrader og 33 rapporterte om snø natt til torsdag denne uken. Lavtrykkets ferd nordover kan skyldes svake jetstrømmer, skriver Electroverse, som tilskriver jetstrømfenomenet til periodisk lav solaktivitet.
Det ligger an til å bli de kaldeste tempetarurene siden 1955, advarer MetSul. I Santa Catarina var det minus 7,8 C på onsdag.
