Antarktis: Den kaldeste vinteren siden målingene begynte
Gjennomsnittstemperaturen på Amundsen-Scott basen på Sydpolen mellom april og september, som er vinteren der nede, var på minus 61 C i 2021. Det er den laveste temperaturen siden målingene begynte i 1957, skriver Washington Post.
Temperaturen var 2,5 C under gjennomsnittet de siste 30 årene.
Den ekstreme kulden førte videre til at iskappen rundt Antarktis nådde sitt femte største nivå i august.
Matthew Lazzara ved Universitetet i Wisconsin er meteorolog med spesiale på Antarktis. Han er forbløffet over det han har observert, skriver Washington Post. Han forteller at det har vært under minus 73 grader ved flere anledninger denne vinteren. Han har vært mange ganger i Antarktis og ikke opplevd liknende.
– Med slike temperaturer er det vanskelig å operere fly. Når det er mellom minus 50 – 58 C er det fare for at hydraulikken fryser eller drivstoffet blir geleaktig, sier han.
Kulden har fortsatt. Den 30 september ble det målt minus 79,4 C på Vostok basen.
